One of today’s most pressing societal challenges is the development of AI systems that people and communities can trust. Achieving this requires more than ensuring that AI systems behave in ways that align with human values: it also requires AI systems that can identify, understand, reason about, and explain behaviour from the perspective of values and value-based trade-offs. As AI becomes increasingly embedded in socio-technical systems involving both human and artificial agents, value awareness becomes essential for supporting trustworthy decision-making, cooperation, and governance. This talk will present the challenges of developing value-aware AI systems, introduce our approach and initial developments in this area, alongside their impact through a range of real-world applications.
